New approach in Lubricants management

New approach in Lubricants management

We consider lubricants no longer disposable commodities but relevant components of any industrial assets

In today industrial facilities, the approach in lubricants management became aware of major changes happened worldwide, regarding storage, handling and conditions monitoring of such essential fluid assets…The actual challenge become acquiring longer useful life, less turnover in replacement of huge volume of fluids, thanks to awareness/education of appointed staff and availability of new tools for an early detection of impending, stress related, criticalities.

Awareness is the clue to proceed toward a more conscious management of such products; awareness built on specific experiences, and on training path more or less customized, rendered by prestigious institutions as Noria is. With the objective to understand in depth chemical & physical details of lubricants it’s today available a very wide range of customized instruments developed by Ametek/Spectro Scientific that enable the field operator to get along with stringent rules of Predictive Maintenance. With a rugged, portable Viscometer and a compact Infrared scanner like Fluidscan it is possible to detect fluid mix up, wrong tapping with incompatible products as well as contamination by alien fluids. At the same time with Minilab suite technician might investigate a wide range of parameters to monitor early stages of unwanted wear (gear boxes and transmissions). The feasibility of matching quick onsite oil analysis, with other forms of diagnostics like Vibration, Ultra sound and Thermal scan of any industrial plants, is definitely expanding the potentiality of personnel involved with such task. The team should become aware of such innovative tools through dedicated training; learning is a must, before any practical application in the field, to avoid risks of any kinds.

Exciting results in terms of reliability for the assets involved come along with satisfaction (efficiency and Safety) by stakeholders due to big savings related with conditions’ monitoring procedures introduced by these lubrication pioneers.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he collaborated with Italian companies promoting marketing strategies for Italian companies in the USA. After his return to Italy, he founded Mecoil Diagnosi Meccaniche Srl for condition monitoring in strategic industrial plants. Since 1993 he has been the Administrator of Mecoil, and since the late 1990s, he has started collaborating with A.I.MAN. In 2003, he became an A.I.MAN. Advisor with the task of promoting regional sections, in addition to being part of the scientific committee of the magazine "Manutenzione." In 2004, he founded Siman, the Italian School of Maintenance, and shortly thereafter, together with Lubecouncil/USA, he launched the first of numerous courses for Lubrication Specialist in Italy. In 2010, he patented the "UCVD" sampling system for lubricating fluids. Since 2020, as the President of the Board of Directors of Mecoil, he has also been coordinating R&D projects.
